Melba is a small Canyon County village about 12 miles south of Nampa, surrounded by seed farms and rural homes on acreage. Most floors we coat here are shops and machine sheds.

Garage floor coatings in Melba

Melba is a small village in southern Canyon County, about 12 miles south of Nampa and three miles northeast of the Snake River. It was founded in 1912 by Clayton C. Todd, who named it after his daughter, and it had 572 residents at the 2020 census. Melba calls itself the “Seed Heart of America” because so much of the farmland around it grows seed crops. The village itself is a few blocks of homes, a school, churches and small businesses. The Melba Joint School District serves a wide rural area, and most of the properties we see here sit on acreage outside the village.

Shops, pole barns and machine sheds

Around Melba, the building that needs a coating is often not an attached garage but a shop. Farm families and rural homeowners keep tractors, sprayers, trucks, trailers, side-by-sides and hunting gear in detached shops and machine sheds. Those slabs take heavy, point-loaded traffic and collect fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid and grease. For a working shop, we recommend a thicker system: aggressive grinding, crack and pit repair, a full-strength base coat, broadcast flake for texture and a tough topcoat. We will tell you honestly if a slab is too cracked, heaved or contaminated to coat well.

Dust from fields and gravel roads

Seed fields, gravel roads and long driveways mean a lot of fine dust and mud tracked into shops and garages. Bare concrete absorbs that dirt and is hard to sweep clean. A sealed, textured floor can be swept, blown out or hosed off. A broadcast flake finish also hides dust between cleanings, which matters when the shop door is open all day during harvest.

Seed, fertilizer and chemical storage

Farm buildings often store seed, fertilizer, pesticides and other chemicals. Spills on bare concrete soak in and stain. Many coatings resist common farm chemicals well, but they are not all the same, and some products can etch or soften certain topcoats. Tell us what is stored in the building, and keep labels or safety data sheets handy, so we can choose a suitable system and explain what to clean up right away.

Irrigation and slab moisture

Southern Canyon County is irrigated farmland, and fields, canals and laterals raise groundwater during the irrigation season. Older shop slabs were often poured without a vapor barrier. Moisture coming up through a slab is one of the main reasons coatings bubble and peel. Before quoting, we test moisture, and where readings are high we use a moisture-tolerant primer or tell you that the slab isn’t a good candidate.

Near the Snake River

Celebration Park, Idaho’s first archaeological park, is on the Snake River just south of Melba, with Native American petroglyphs and the restored 1897 Guffey railroad bridge. Families here often keep boats, rafts, fishing gear and campers in their garages and shops. Wet gear, trailer tires and river grit are hard on bare concrete. A coated floor with anti-slip texture near the door is easier to clean and safer underfoot.

Hot summers and cold winters

Melba gets hot, dry summers and cold winters. Hot tires pulled in on summer days can lift weak coatings, an issue called hot tire pickup, so we use a primer and topcoat rated for it. In unheated shops, the slab and air need to be warm enough for the coating to cure, so late spring through early fall is the best time for most rural buildings.

Timing around the farm year

Farm shops are busiest during planting and harvest. Many customers here prefer to have floors done in a slower window, when equipment can sit outside for a few days. We can also coat part of a shop while you keep using the rest.
